The recent death of Professor Stephen Hawking due to motor neuron disease, or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), has cast limelight on the rare disorder. Professor Dr Nortina Shahrizaila and Dr Loh Ee Chin share more about how the Motor Neurone Disease Clinic in University Malaya Medical Centre. They talk about the multidisciplinary approach to help patients.

In 2014, it would have been impossible to avoid seeing people pouring buckets of ice-cold water over themselves. The “Ice Bucket Challenge” campaign raise hundreds of millions of dollars for a disease that most of us knew little about—motor neurone disease. It’s a disease in which nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord break down, and the individual struggles to walk and speak. Even breathing becomes a challenge.
